Tackle your junk drawer
July 28, 2009 # 10:18 PM # Decluttering # No CommentToday you have an assignment: clean out your junk drawer.
We all have one. A space in your home or office that becomes a landing space for small items on counters that get tossed in there “for later” during a cleaning frenzy. Junk drawers and cabinets are nothing more than an excuse for not putting items where they need to be, or they are a warning bell that you have items that need a permanent home.
Common items collected here include pens, spare keys, matchbooks, receipts, screws or nails that “your not sure where they came from,” or miscellaneous office supplies like rubber bands and paper clips.
Unclutterer has an easy process to follow:
- DUMP IT (spread the contents on a flat surface and begin the purge)
- PITCH IT (odds are, most of this can be trashed – you’ll never miss it)
- SORT IT (begin piles for which room each of these items go to — and then deliver the items to their proper homes)
If you can honestly justify why each of these items belongs in that drawer for easy access, purchase a drawer divider and keep it organized, dedicating spaces for particular items and nothing else!
If you’re like me, the cleaning out of a junk drawer is a scary experience, but make it a priority to clear out this symbol of clutter before the end of the day.
Got any scary photos of your own junk drawer? Send them our way with a “before and after” photo when you’ve cleaned it out and you could be featured in OPTED magazine!
