Make travel packing easier
July 28, 2009 # 9:39 PM # Organization # One CommentI have a bold suggestion that might draw fire from thifty money-savers out there (don’t worry — I’m one of those too): make travel easier by creating a travel toiletries bag constructed with a seperate set of the essentials. Yes, it requires purchasing two of each one of your personal grooming supplies, but it will save you a lot of hassle when you travel. Here’s why you should consider it:
- Peace of mind: have you experienced the packing scramble when you wonder if you have all your grooming essentials that you need for your trip? This strategy solves that problem
- Efficiency for frequent travelers: business executives, this is for you. If you travel many times a month (or week) packing and unpacking the same essentials you’re using in your own bathroom is more than a hassle, it’s a waste of valuable time. Knowing that you have a “portable bathroom” of your grooming tools eliminates the need to constantly repackage your toiletries bag
- Save space: if you invest some time in this project, you can travel lighter and save space. Some inexpensive purchases and planning can reduce the need for large containers and may allow you to downgrade your luggage size
To help you with this project, I’ve created a gender-neutral list that will ensure you are prepared for looking and feeling your best when you travel:
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Hairspray and/or gel
- Razor and shaving cream
- Small brush and comb
- Shower gel or soap
- Deoderant
- Sunscreen
- Face wash and moisturizer
- Mini lint brush
- Glasses/contacts cases, extra pair of contacts, contact solution
- Allergy medicine and aspirin/Tylenol
- 2 bandaids, 10 cu-tips, 10 cotton balls
- Mini sewing kit with safety pins
I highly recommend checking out the Target travel section for this project. Almost any toiletry item you can imagine is in miniature size perfect for a toiletries bag, and if you’re frugal like me and want to buy in bulk, they have a wide assortment of portable plastic containers that can hold everything in your previously purchased portions from shampoo to contact solution!

Great tips. I would also add a second phone charger to the list. This way you’re not always scrambling to find the charger. And if you leave it at the hotel on accident, you’re not out of luck when you get home.
